Guitar Lessons Uk

Does anyone play the harp? How did you learn? any advice welcome please!?
I have no previous musical knowledge (apart from a few guitar lessons whilst i was a school) but i have decided i would like to learn to play the harp.
I am very serious about this decision and have wanted to for some time but dont really know how to go about it!
I am aware how expensive they are so wouldnt be able to buy one for a long time, do i just find a teacher and use theirs? is it better to hire one? is it difficult to learn? do you need any other equipment other than the obvious, the instrument!? How much can lessons cost? How long realistically can it take to become able to play full length peices?
I know where to look for a teacher but wanted to hear others expeirences first.
I live near Stansted Airport (UK)
Any advice or Personal experiences would be really helpful! thanks ![]()
Whats the difference between the type with pedals and the type without?
If i do buy, what important points do i need to look out for?
I can help you with some of your questions; I’ve played Irish harp for about eighteen years.
When I started, I didn’t have much musical experience either; I had played tin whistle for about two years, and taught myself because it was simple to pick up. I discovered that I really liked Irish traditional music, and began hanging around our local tune session. About that time, I too decided that I really wanted a harp. I started out with a cheap harp, although I would strongly advise against that, because it is much harder to produce a consistent good sound with an instrument that isn’t built well. I was ready to find a professional quality instrument after I had been playing for about a year, and found that I wanted to get more serious with it.
The popular conception of a harp is the large pedal harps that are often seen in orchestras. They are capable of the full chromatic range (all the sharps and flats), using seven pedals arranged at the bottom of the sound chamber. Each pedal controls one set of strings–for instance, one controls all the D strings. Each pedal has three positions, which operate a mechanism allowing each string to potentially sound as a flat, a natural or a sharp of that note, depending on where the pedal is set. This can be done while playing, so the pedal harp can change key, or sound accidentals, without the player having to stop and retune. These harps typically have 46 or 47 strings; the price range typically starts at about £10,000.
I play a lever harp; my musical style is Irish traditional. A lever harp has a lever at the top of each string that makes its vibrating length a little bit shorter, so it brings up the pitch by half a step. It is diatonically tuned, and each lever is set in advance to set the key. I can change a few while I’m playing, if the tune needs it. It doesn’t have the full chromatic range available, but for Irish music, I really don’t need it. I can manage three flats up to four sharps (the keys of E-flat up to E), which covers things pretty well. My harp cost about £2,400 (actually about $3,800; I’m American!) for a 32-string harp with full levers, but lever harps come in many sizes and price ranges, depending on the maker.
I am almost entirely self-taught; there are books available to teach you. But it’s always best to find a teacher, who can prevent bad habits from taking hold, and who will help your progress. You might inquire at your local music shop for connections and advice.
