Learn Piano Online: Find Piano Lessons Offering Real Value-For-Money

Article by Tony Dunne

Everyone wants value for money when they buy into a new project. And these days especially, money is in short supply. So, if you’re a budding pianist looking to learn piano online, you might be a bit nervous about which package to choose. And, whilst it’s true that there are some incredible bargains online, you do have to be a bit wary and know what you’re looking for.

The good news is that new technology is having a big impact on how playing piano is taught and this has produced a huge variety of computer-based learning programs for people who want to learn to play a musical instrument. There is a lot that can be learned just by visiting the more popular video sites like YouTube, where you can access a bewildering number of videos absolutely free. And that is where you need to be careful in your choice of material.

You see, whilst it is possible to learn to play piano, or at least pick up some of the rudiments of playing, just by working your way through some of these videos, it’s very unlikely you’ll achieve an understanding of how to put a piece of music together by taking this route alone.

This is the difference between picking up a few hints and tips on the one hand and buying into a program of lessons that teaches you the building blocks of music. The other thing to bear in mind is that many of the videos you’ll find on the free sites are of very poor quality and may even encourage you to develop bad habits, which will need correcting later on.

So make sure you do your research before you decide on a particular course of action. For example, you’re probably much better off buying a software package that contains a complete course of instruction, rather than relying on a few videos that demonstrate one or two shortcuts, or how to play a single piece of music. In this way, you’ll be able to build gradually on your initial learning so that you can see a teaching method in practice, and gain confidence from your achievements as your skill and knowledge develop.

When looking at the cost of an online package, bear in mind you can expect to be charged between and for just 30 minutes of tuition with your local piano teacher, and that this is likely to increase as you become more advanced. In comparison, online piano lessons are a much better deal, providing, as previously stated, you find the right course.

You can expect to be charged in one of two ways. Either you’ll be asked to pay for a complete package, which you then download onto the hard drive of your computer. Or you pay a recurring fee for membership to a special website, so you can access different learning materials each month.

Whichever kind you choose, the great advantage over traditional lessons is that you can take as long as you want to complete each component of the course. And you can return to any part of the course any time you want.

The one thing you need to be very cautious about is moving ahead too quickly. Whilst it’s always a good idea to look back over ground you’ve already covered, it is not advisable to jump ahead to something you have not been prepared for in previous modules of the course. This often leads to disappointment and can completely undermine your confidence and motivation.

With that said, there really are many advantages to learning to play the piano online and, if you exercise reasonable caution and do the necessary research, there’s no reason you shouldn’t find a course to complement your own particular musical journey.
