Electric Guitars for Kids, My Favorite Picks:

Electric Guitars for Kids, My Favorite Picks:

Article by Gina Kay

For their 1st guitar, countless kids gravitate toward desiring an electric. For sure, there’s a particular coolness to banging out power chords on an electric ala’ Angus Young of AC DC or Pete Townsend of the Who. Additionally, for kids, electric guitars are easier to learn on and last better than a hollow body acoustic arising from their solid body construction.

When purchasing an electric guitar, correct scale length is more critical than body size as nearly all electrics are somewhat narrow and compact. Scale length is the length between the bridge of the guitar and the nut, the area at the end of the fingerboard near to the tuning pegs.

For younger children in the 4-8 year old range, a scale length of about 22.7 inches is the perfect fit. Although many electrics come in scale lengths down to 22.2 inches, any additional length will keep your son or daughter from outgrowing the musical instrument too soon. For comparison; adult full size guitars such as the Fender Stratocaster have a scale length of 25.75 inches while Gibson Guitars are an inch shorter.

Although the suggested scale length for kids is only a couple of inches less, this could make a big difference in a child’s ability to play, especially when the fingerboard is a little narrower for easy forming of chords.

Here’s three of my preferred picks for Electric Guitars for Kids :

1. The Fender Squier Mini guitar:

This model has a 22.75″ scale length, three single-coil pickups, and five-way switching. A really hip choice in black, this is a outstanding choice for a beginning electric.

2. Silvertone SS10 Citation electric guitar package:

A great number of parents find that rather than purchasing the guitar and accessories individually, it’s wise to purchase a complete package. The SS10 Citation has an amplifier, digital tuner, chord chart, strings, strap, picks, cable and gig bag at a very fair price. A great many beginners (including myself) began on a Silvertone, a maker that’s been building electric guitars for 50+ years.

3.Debutante Rock Candy Guitar, Cosmic Purple:

As a rock n’ roll gal, I have a soft spot in my heart for this line of electric guitars, expressly marketed towards young girls. I’m certain though that girls and boys would like the Rock Candy Guitar in cosmic Purple. The trademark Daisy Rock “Slim and Narrow” neck makes it easier for kids with smaller hands to play. I’m sure Prince in his “Purple Rain” days would have been super cool playing the Cosmic Purple!
