Thank you for this excellent lesson. I am kind of old to start learning but this is very helpful for someone like myself that is at the point of learning from the absolute beginning.

fuck yeah, Ramstein as in the airport? or Rammstein the band?

My very first lesson. I feel like my hands are too small and my fingers don’t want to lay flat on the neck so i’m working on being able to put my entire hand in the correct position. I’m determined and think this is a great way to start. I played the piano for years and this is total a different hand positioning.

thank you verry much

i myself am right handed so this question might seem stupid, but for a person that is left handed, would the general concept still be the same, or would there be a different technique they (left handed people) would have to learn?

I quite like this. Only got my guitar on Thursday, and already I feel like i can do this fluently. Well at least to 30% to 40% to this videos level. Which isn’t too bad I feel.

Awesome lessons. I will show this to my friend. Although I think he already knows this stuff. He’s pretty good (he’s here on YouTube actually).

you know i actually found if u need to strengthen your grip(silly i know but try it) play guitar hero it helped me get my reaction time up and helps u increase your hand strength.

RockMusicTeacherJuly 28th, 2011 at 5:08 pm

@Guitar101Ramstein Thank you for your response. It is a challenging and strength-building exercise in any case!

Guitar101RamsteinJuly 28th, 2011 at 5:45 pm

@RockMusicTeacher Honestly, I think that could get people into bad habits/technique where they end up lifting fingers when not necessary instead of working on economy of motion. One of the points of this exercise with the fingers down is to increase the dexterity and mobility in the fingers, which can be a challenge, which is a good thing in my opinion.

thanks for the video!

I use to do this exercise and my pinky use to look like yours…far off the string…its actually better to do one at a time and still keep the fingers close to the strings

Great patient lesson, man. Thanks for contributing this video.

NSCAptJuly 28th, 2011 at 7:15 pm

What if you’re having trouble locating the strings you need and you have to keep looking down or over the body of the guitar to find them? And what is the best way to work on hand positioning? I’ve heard a few people say pretend you’re holding an egg or golf ball? Any suggestions……..

RockMusicTeacherJuly 28th, 2011 at 8:06 pm

I’m a teacher myself, and I like your style. I teach a similar exercise, but I recommend they release their fingers to increase mobility across the neck. I recognize holding all four fingers down as being a good strength building exercise, yet it sometimes seems to limit mobility. What do you think?

Guitar101RamsteinJuly 28th, 2011 at 8:32 pm

@KoreaXFan I am using a pick in this video, but you can use your thumb also.

KoreaXFanJuly 28th, 2011 at 8:49 pm

When you pluck, do you use your thumb?

NewtTheDramaLlamaJuly 28th, 2011 at 9:46 pm

Thanks. I’m definitely going to keep using this to warm up and practise keeping my fingers down on string and off the ones below. It’s helped a lot already.

LeoLovesNatureJuly 28th, 2011 at 10:30 pm

@GOGGLES0510 Do it agaisnt a wall or something so fingers dont raise up that much

WhoblehwahV2July 28th, 2011 at 10:57 pm

I’m trying to do this, but for some reason my pinky always bends towards the direction of the 3rd finger. -_- Fucking useless ass pinky. Then again though I have sprained this same pinky in the past so maybe its just weak now, lol.
