now im wondering : some people say you should curl you fingers, when you press on the strings at the fingerboard, other people say you should hold you fingers stretched and let them float very soft on the other strings… what’s the best too do?

This is sort of for the advanced for simple chording. I’m used to individual bass notes. Couldn’t really see the chord writing on the poster board. I’m going into a music shop and get lessons. I’ll have the bass in my hands to play.

Tabs suck ass, Chords are so much better.

Dang…nice bass

@hecbiz75 Yeah, I have nothing against Claypool, his chordings are very obscure and angular, but he sticks to the groove of the music. When a lot of bass players comp chords, following the groove seems to be the one thing they forget.

hecbiz75August 9th, 2011 at 2:11 pm

@dharmaseed It depends on the setting and the musical goals. If there’s a keyboardist in the band, he can go lower to fill up the bottom while the bass goes up. It’s good for variety. Also, you might not like Les Claypool. But, a lot of his songs feature bass lines that are played above the 7th fret, if not much higher, while the guitar does odd counterlines or lower chords. Does it sound bad? Not to me. Music is art, and as such, it shouldn’t be fixated on “rules.” Just my two cents.

i like this and its easy to understand thank you, BUT you NEED to turn the dang bass amp UP! Cant hear it without goin through unnessesary girations. TY. glhf.

Papertiger0724August 9th, 2011 at 4:10 pm

@dharmaseed yeah this is prly isnt for playing with a band. I dont have a keyboard or know how to play one. I
just have a loop pedal. It helps practicing some stuff if i have chords to play along to.

dharmaseedAugust 9th, 2011 at 4:26 pm

Chords sound clearer up an octave, and the bottom drops out of the song when you play up that high.

SuperGeo1987August 9th, 2011 at 5:08 pm

That’s burled walnut on the top of that bass, right? It looks really nice. The action on that bass is really low too. It looks easier to play than my four string. I have an Ibanez GSR200. It’s a really good bass, not just for the money. But that bass is really fancy. I like it.

tbass130August 9th, 2011 at 5:52 pm

5 strings are awesome, just more playing capabilities. which could never be a bad thing

rockrock3090August 9th, 2011 at 6:29 pm

@nuke97 you tune the bass on C…. one way to use a 5 string bass…

generictitlemasterAugust 9th, 2011 at 7:04 pm

@jjm1388 Please please please learn how to spell. Also, learning how to use a 5-string is very useful, despite what you might think. No matter what genre it can be used, you just have to make that 5th string get used. There’s really no downside, unless your hand just will not get used to the extra string, which should come with a lot of practice. I went straight from a 4 to a 6. It took practice, but it’s nothing a player worth his salt can’t do.

jjm1388August 9th, 2011 at 7:37 pm

@Steve128967 to tell u the truth yes iam a amateur bass player becuz i just picked it up but i learned alot since i left that comment so im getting there but whatever i had a 5 string but it was too hard for a bigginer like me so i would sa-jest that you new guys to the bass start on a four string

Steve128967August 9th, 2011 at 8:22 pm

@jjm1388 You’re clearly an amateur bassist who knows pretty much nothing about theory or performance… go take some lessons.
I’m actually surprised expervillage found someone who knows what they’re talking about for this video though.

explosivedoubtAugust 9th, 2011 at 8:28 pm

@jjm1388 maybe thats all YOU can do with it.

nuke97August 9th, 2011 at 8:37 pm

Anybody who just out right nay says a 5-string bass is dumb….did you all not learn to use one?? This guy is playing CHORDS which need a higher voicing anyway that is all.
