@Angelfromfar write in Youtube “guitar standard tuning” and try to make your all strings sound like the video shows. But be careful with the first string (The lowest string, same as “high E”, if you go too high it will break, this is what happened to me several times when I was a beginner). As you make sure they sound same as in the video, then you’ll be able to practice as the youtubers’ guitars.

@2pactim
I pretty much do it this way, and a s a learner Ive cottoned on to the fact you also shouldnt be too rigid about it. An example would be a piece where the high E string was played very little, or not at all, and the easy method is to shift all those fingers up one string. There are also pieces where Ive found it easier and more fluid to abandon the ring finger temporarily. But generally I stick to the same method as yourself.

Thankyou so much. It’s great to hear that. I only pick with my thumb and my forefinger also, but I’ve been thinking lately I need to start practicing with more fingers. Maybe I won’t have to go to all that trouble after all!

your videos are great and cover some interesting songs.
thanks

wow i would love to learn that song. If you can make a video of the song it would be great. But if you can’t that’s fine. Love your videos, and you are a great teacher.

Thank you :D

In most guitar lessons it is also recommanded to use your ring finger. I find it easier to use just my index and middle finger for the bottom strings actually. Playing with my ring finger just feels kind of unnatural.

2pactimAugust 11th, 2011 at 8:56 pm

The way i do it, is I belive the best practice wise way (helps build strength for all fingers picking)I use the first three fingers on the bottom three strings G B E and my thumb for the top three strings E A D, leaving my smallest finger (pinky finger) to do nothing, hope that helps somebody..

I don’t think about it, really. I just do whatever comes to me as natural with my picking. Although I tend to use my ringfinger and middle-finger more than the first finger.
